Project Overview: Deepening Connection Through Audio

At Meta Reality Labs, I supported a research project aimed at enhancing human connection through audio. We investigated whether spatial audio in phone calls could significantly improve “social connectedness” compared to traditional mono audio, bringing users closer to their loved ones as if in the same room.

The Research Question: Quantifying Connection

This controlled experiment sought to determine if spatial audio could:

  • Increase social connectedness (e.g., physical presence, shared understanding).
  • Lead to more nonverbal behaviors (e.g., gestures, expressions) compared to mono audio.

Methodology: A Rigorous, User-Centric Approach

As a Research Assistant, I played a key role in executing a controlled within-subjects experiment with 30 dyads. Participants experienced in-person, spatial audio, and mono audio conversations.

My core contributions included:

  • Recruiting and scheduling all 30 dyad participants, using creative methods.
  • Moderating all study sessions, guiding users through conditions.
  • Troubleshooting the study setup to ensure data consistency.
  • Performing meticulous behavioral coding of body language and facial expressions from video recordings.
  • Providing insights for future study directions, including exploring video formats and separate physical locations.

Key Findings: Nuances of Connection

The study revealed nuanced insights into spatial audio’s impact:

  • Spatial audio did improve social connectedness compared to mono audio, specifically enhancing feelings of being physically in the same room and on the same wavelength.
  • Spatial audio also led to more nonverbal, rapport-building behaviors than mono audio.
  • However, in-person communication remained superior for overall social connectedness and some nonverbal behaviors.

Impact & My Learning: Validating and Informing Strategy

This research, where I played a central supporting role, delivered crucial insights:

  • It provided Meta’s audio team with the first validated measure of social connectedness, a foundational metric for future work.
  • The findings validated spatial audio’s potential to enhance connection, directly supporting Meta’s mission.
  • The insights helped the team understand the specific strengths and limitations of spatial audio in this context, informing product design and strategic prioritization for future features.

This experience reinforced my ability to execute complex user research studies, extract nuanced findings, and contribute to strategic product decisions that align with user needs and business goals. I learned the immense value of understanding both quantitative and qualitative user feedback to drive meaningful innovation.
